UKUEM History
Umoja wa Kiislam wa Elimu, Uchumi na Maendeleo (UKUEM) — literally "The Islamic Association for Education and Economic Development" — is a membership-based, non-governmental, service delivery oriented organisation registered under the Civil Society Act No. 6 of 1995 with registration number 177/2002.
UKUEM was founded by 43 pioneer members who believed that through education, awareness and motivation, positive social perception and attitude change could be achieved. Guided by Islamic values, the organisation has grown tremendously to over 367 members — both female and male — spread across Zanzibar, with its Headquarters (Makao Makuu) in Kijangwani, Zanzibar City, and its Main Office (Afisi Kuu) in Chake Chake, Pemba.
Operating in three core thematic areas — Education, Economic Development, and Social Welfare — UKUEM's Strategic Plan 2024–2028 charts an ambitious course: increasing the number of qualified students from 45 to 380, reducing unethical practices in schools by 50%, and extending social welfare care to 250 community members in need.
